TRISTONE Flowtech Group - won Award in the US

Bi-layer co-extrusion plastic pipe - polyamide coupled with advanced processing technology bring innovation to automotive coolant pipes (Awarded by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) for most Innovative use of Plastics Award – Chassis 2014)

Replacing metal, saving weight

The quest for Tristone Flowtech Group was to find a material/technology solution for an unusually long 2 to 3 meter variable flexibility coolant pipe designed to transport water and glycol fluid from the radiator end tank at the front of the car to the engine at the back, while saving weight. The challenge was not so much the length of the part since it was extruded, but to produce large pipes of up to 27mm diameter, with suitable compliance that would still resist 3 bar pressures, aggressive fluids, and road salt.

The solution was found with Dupont via a co-extrusion of Bynel®PP & Zytel® PA612 LCPA and its patented Variable Stiffness Bellows (VSB) technology, enabling thermoplastic parts to be flexible yet high pressure resistant. At the same time, the new pipe can withstand engine compartment temperatures of 150°C, aggressive fluid temperatures up to 120°C combined with road salt, and continuous working temperatures of 95°C.

In this application, Zytel® PA612 in a corrugated extrusion offers a lightweight alternative to metal, enabling up to 60% weight reduction over the former aluminum component.

This product is applied on Renault Twingo and Daimler Smart programs:

Tristone Flowtech USA
Automotive Testing & Engine Expo
Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi, Michigan

Tristone USA made its debut at the 2014 Engine Expo at the Novi Suburban Showplace this October. Several automotive and non-automotive testing companies along with specialty engine parts manufacturers served the Engine and Test Expo. The members from the USA team along with Johan Bunse, Tristone Business Development Director, were responsible for showcasing the exhibit in an effort to inform the expo attendees about the Tristone product portfolio. In addition to the Tristone Booth, Johan Bunse helped kick-off the 3-day event by presenting the company and its capabilities to the Technology Forum.

Local and international engineers seeking to learn about new suppliers and their technologies were the main attendees to the forum. Johan Bunse gave a complete company presentation but placed emphasis on the plastic PA pipe used on the Renault Twingo and Daimler Smart, electric vehicle, during the presentation. This uniquely extruded product sparked an interest with SAE writers, who were also in attendance. Following the presentation SAE interviewed Johan, and plans to include Tristone in a publication of the event in the next SAE news release.

The Tristone USA participants, who included Jason Ruetz, Jeremy Dicks, Terry Baldwin, Justin Haugh, and Stephane Demolin, worked alongside Johan Bunse to network with both suppliers and potential customers, in an effort to grow the Tristone brand in the US market. Representatives from General Motors, Ford, and Detroit Diesel were among the larger companies who visited the booth. There were several suppliers who showed an interest in working with Tristone for both testing and prototype development. These suppliers are also familiar with Tristone’s customers and their requirements.

Tristone Flowtech Group Plant Nantes in France / New buildings

“We’re happy to announce the completion of new buildings for our plant Nantes, France“, so Michael Schlachter Managing Director of the company.

With this project, initiated in 2011, we could reach two main objectives:

  • Integrate warehouse surface directly connected to the existing facility, in order to internalize the storage and the dispatching of the finished goods, which were outsourced to a logistics provider and therefore to optimize the plant layout.
  • Destroy old buildings attached to our company.

The new building was provided by an industrial building investor, Alsei. We could contract with the industrial building investor to refurbish the old building, and equip it with all the necessary equipments in order to use it as a logistic warehouse. In that respect, 6.000m² of old building and offices were destroyed. They have refurbished 5.000m² remaining surface, installed new lighting system, created a complete new concrete floor, according to logistic flatness standard, created three docks, according to the latest legislation, and they have created a corridor connecting this refurbished building to our factory.

Our company in Nantes is now managing all the logistics with its own personnel, with a storage capacity of 3.700 pallets of finished goods, and is shipping 16 trucks per day to our various customers. The employees are now able to use parking slots directly next to the plant.

With this project, so Günter Frölich, President and CEO of the Group, “we are showing our commitment to provide investments also in France to improve the competitiveness of our company and to provide a modern plant infrastructure for our employees”.

TRISTONE FLOWTECH GROUP – 2012 Indian Auto Expo Participation

From the 5th to 11th January, TRISTONE Flowtech Group participated in the 11th Indian Auto Expo (www.autoexpo.in) in New Delhi. The booth was shared with local supplier Bony Polymers with whom TRISTONE currently have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The Expo gave good exposure to many local OEM’s as well as the Indian branches of known European/American OEM’s. In particular the following companies visited, showing specific interest in TRISTONE products.

Maruti/Suzuki, PSA, GM, Mahindra, Jaguar/Landrover, Volvo, Chrysler, JCB, Tata Motors, Behr, Delphi Motors.

Interest was generally shown in all products, with more specific questions relating to surge tank development capabilities and fibre cooling hose technology. Fibre is seen as a new development with potential cost savings in a historically standardised product area.

Participants present at the Expo from TRISTONE were Andrew Hoodless (Program Management), Stephane Thomas (Sales and Marketing) & Patricia Oliveira (R&D).

In conclusion the Expo was a real success both in increasing TRISTONE’S exposure in the Indian market and as a potential low cost supplier for European OEM’s. The time spent with Bony Polymers also strengthened the relationship building trust between both parties.
